The Turpentine Beetle is the largest native pine bark beetle in the U.S. The beetle will typically colonizie in fresh cut pines and other distressed trees.
The larvae of the black turpentine beetle will tunnel under the bark of pine trees. That can cause large clumps of sap along trunk and separation of the tree’s protective bark. The beetle generally reproduces in fresh stumps and bases of trees weakened or killed by other biotic or abiotic agents, but it can also infest and sometimes kills apparently healthy trees.
Holes created by turpentine beetles will form a “pitch” of tree sap. This defensive move by the tree can often times thwart the invasion but may not enough to stop all activity by the beetles. Beetles surviving the gooey sap will move laterally around the tree trunk, channeling galleries that are later used by young beetles.
